Skin Cancer Clinical Attachments

At the FNQH Cairns Integrated Melanoma Centre, we believe the best way to advance patient care is through education and experience. Our Skin Cancer Clinical Attachment Program, led by Dr Vin Rajeswaran, gives doctors, nurses, and practice managers a rare opportunity to gain hands-on training in skin-cancer diagnosis, treatment, and dermatopathology.

A Program Designed for Every Level

Whether you’re just starting out or refining advanced skills, our attachments are tailored to your background and clinical goals.
Each program runs for two to five days at our state-of-the-art training facility in Cairns, combining theory, clinical observation, and supervised procedures.

Participants learn through real-world cases, developing practical competence and diagnostic confidence across:

  • Comprehensive skin checks

  • Biopsy techniques and minor procedures — from ellipses to flaps and grafts (subject to availability)

  • Use of advanced imaging technology such as LC-OCT

  • Total Body Photography set-up and interpretation

  • General dermatopathology consultations

  • Activities tailored to each participant’s special interests

You’ll also experience the end-to-end journey from the clinical presentation through to histopathology with an inside look at our laboratory operations and direct interaction with our pathologists.

Broaden Your Understanding

Our Clinical Attachment Program bridges the gap between clinical and laboratory by including:

  • Frozen-Section training (CCPDMA)

  • Histopathology walk-throughs

  • Ongoing mentorship with FNQH pathologists and clinicians

  • Documentation and Medicare billing guidance, including a shortcut chart for relevant item numbers

  • Certificate of attendance upon completion

  • Six-month training positions are available for suitable applicants

Participants also gain exposure to advanced diagnostic tools rarely available elsewhere and can learn more about our ongoing clinical trials and research into melanoma detection.

Who Can Participate?

Our attachments welcome:

  • Doctors – hands-on training in skin-cancer medicine and dermatopathology, supporting advanced practice and SCCA Fellowship pathways.

  • Nurses – practical experience in skin-cancer prevention, detection, and patient care, guided by industry experts.

  • Practice Managers – operational insights for running a successful skin-cancer clinic, improving efficiency and patient experience.

“FNQH Cairns Integrated Melanoma Centre is not just a skin clinic — it’s a place to experience innovation in skin-cancer diagnosis and care.”
Dr Vin Rajeswaran, Pathologist & Director of Training
